PRS Oberoi, doyen of Indian hospitality, passes away at 94
Prithvi Raj Singh (Biki) Oberoi, the doyen of Indian hospitality and Chairman Emeritus of the Oberoi Group, passed away today morning, leaving behind a legacy of impeccable hospitality. Mr. has been credited with redefining the luxury for the hospitality industry.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform the peaceful passing of PRS Oberoi, Chairman Emeritus of The Oberoi Group, earlier today,” a statement said.
He was bestowed with many awards in India and globally. PRS Oberoi received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour, from President Pratibha Patil in 2008 in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the country in tourism and hospitality.
Mr. Oberoi is credited with placing Oberoi hotels on the international luxury travellers’ map with the opening of several new luxury hotels in Mauritius, Indonesia, Egypt and hotels in India at important tourist destinations such as Jaipur, Agra, Udaipur, Ranthambhore and Mashobra in the Himalayas. Mr. Oberoi has directed the development of these hotels breaking ground in new destinations and redefining architectural and design standards in luxury hospitality.
The Oberoi Group, founded in 1934, operates 32 hotels, Nile Cruisers. According to the website of the Oberoi Hotels, the group has a presence in 7 countries under the luxury ‘Oberoi’ and five-star ‘Trident’ brands. The group is also engaged in flight catering, airport restaurants, travel and tour services, car rentals, project management, and corporate air charters.
